MEXICO CITY – Composer and jazz pianist Eugenio Toussaint died from a
heart attack at his Mexico City home, the National Council for Culture and
the Arts, or Conaculta, said. He was 56. Toussaint, one of the leading
figures on the Mexican jazz scene, died on Tuesday, Conaculta said.
He started his career in 1975, worked with artists like legendary trumpet
player Herb Alpert and served as music director for Paul Anka. Toussaint
later composed concert music that has been performed by the National
Symphonic Orchestra, the UNAM Philharmonic Orchestra, the Camerata of the
Americas and the Berklee College of Music jazz band, among others. He spent
the past decade alternating among composition, solo jazz performances and
performances with his trio, Conaculta said.

include “Tres Suites” (1999), “Gauguin”
(2000), which was nominated for a Latin Grammy, “Musica de camara”
(2004), another nominee for a Latin Grammy, and “Dias de
los muertos” (2005), as well as the jazz albums “El pez
dorado” (2002), “Trio” (2004) and “Oinos”
(2008).
He also served as academic director of the Fermatta
music school from 2003 to 2005, as well as host of the “Suave es la Noche”
television show on Channel 22 between 2003 and 2006.
